Education and Early Experience
Dr. Megan Mullin utilizes her background as an exercise expert to help clients with performance enhancement and injury prevention. She enrolled at Sonoma State University to learn more about the human body and brain, earning degrees in Kinesiology and Psychology. This helped her to integrate the mind and body in her approach to health and wellness, discovering the importance of a holistic approach in medicine.
After graduating, Megan began a three-year physical therapy program at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California. She earned a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2015. Afterward, she enrolled in the PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) Residency at Kaiser, Vallejo. There, she learned the art of PNF and spent three months doing intensive coursework and hands-on training while working with patients in acute rehab. These patients had recent strokes, SCI, TBI, and orthopedic injuries. She also learned how to apply this method to elite athletes to improve neural recruitment and timing to increase power for sports performance.
Megan strives to learn more and develop her skills further by consistently taking courses all over the country. She is currently working towards becoming a Certified Manual Physical Therapist (CMPT) through the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAOIMT). Megan stays up to date on research to ensure she is using the latest evidence to guide practice decisions.
Treatment Philosophy
Over the years, Megan has worked at several different outpatient facilities. She found that physical therapists were able to work with patients for less and less time due to minimal reimbursement from insurance companies and high overhead. Shorter sessions can ultimately lead to a less thorough and less effective treatment.
“I strongly believe that it is more effective and efficient to see patients for longer duration and with one-on-one treatments with a physical therapist,” says Megan. “This model allows people to see results faster and reach their goals with fewer visits. Plus, patients save money from the reduced amount of copays and save time from their busy schedules.”
For these reasons, she decided to make her dream a reality and opened her own practice. Megan works to maintain a low overhead so she can see patients for longer durations at a reasonable cost. Her private practices are located in local health clubs where equipment is accessible during treatment sessions. The two Dr. Megan Mullin Physical Therapy clinics are at 28 West Gym in Woodstock, New York, and Kennedy Club Fitness in San Luis Obispo, California.
When she’s not working, Megan’s hobbies and interests include anything in the outdoors. She also enjoys traveling to new places and immersing herself in different cultures. Depending on the season, most weekends, you can find her rock climbing at the Gunks or hiking the Catskill 3500′ peaks.
